Back to school means back to making school lunches for the crew. Last September is when I really started preparing lunches at home for the kids to take to school. Depending on the school lunch menu, I was making 2/3 kids’ lunches at least three days out of the week. My youngest is very picky and didn’t want school lunch unless it was breakfast for lunch (i.e.: French toast sticks, etc.). For anyone planning on packing lunches, whether it’s your first time or if you need some fresh ideas or inspo, we’ve got the 4-1-1 for a successful school year!

Let’s start with containers! Kristy’s son is a picky eater, so these Bentgo boxes are perfect when putting together a lunch that kids can graze on with a variety of items that hopefully they are interested in that day because, well, kids…one day they love one thing and the next day they won’t touch it! Bentgo is leak-proof and some of the Bentgo boxes have ice packs – they’re called Bentgo Chill Boxes.

I have an Omie box for my youngest daughter. She isn’t a big eater and prefers turkey and cheese with mustard as her entree, or if we have left over spaghetti or mac ‘n’ cheese, I’ll fill up her thermos bowl with boiling water and let it sit while I heat up her leftovers, dump the water and replace with the meal – it keeps it at the perfect temperature until her lunch time. Add a couple of snacks and she’s good to go!

Anyone else wonder why most kids lunch boxes are so small?! It’s often hard to find items that are able to fit. Kristy found these sandwich containers for her daughter’s lunch bag. These are reusable, easy to open and close, and are safe for the freezer too.

I came across these snap-lock lunch box containers last year and they also fit well in my kids’ lunch boxes…we have ones from Pottery Barn Kids. They are slightly bento-inspired with a couple different compartments. They are not leak-proof, but they get the job done.

I use Ello containers to make fresh fruit cups and SnapLock dip cups for ranch dressing or other condiments so that there are no spills or leaks. I like to use silicone muffin cups as a space-saver to place snacks like pretzels, goldfish, cookies and more for easy access. My favorite score last year was these Ello on the go cutlery sets. I love using them over plastic utensils.

Kristy gets creative with her son’s lunches since he is the pickiest eater! She uses fun cookie cutters to make different shapes for his sandwiches – and she says that they have actually helped! The smaller shapes can be used for fruits like melons and apples. Don’t forget about the cutters to make homemade uncrustables

Does anyone else find that there’s never enough room for ice packs?! When you’re packing lunch meat and/or cheese sandwiches and items like yogurt and cheese sticks, you need it! Kristy found these fun character thin ice packs that fit perfectly.

PRO TIP: If you have a gogurt kid, freeze the gogurts and use them as ice packs! They keep your items cool, and it thaws out just in time for lunch!

For thermoses, we’ve been through the wringer with trying to find ones that are great at keeping their drinks cold and NOT leaking everywhere! These are my go-tos!

  • Simple Modern – they come in two sizes and some fun patterns
  • Hydroflask – these are great for sports and with having to personalize everything, there’s a nice sleeve you can add your kiddo’s name to
  • Thermoflask – keeps beverages ice-cold for 24 hrs, and hot for up to 12 hrs with double-wall and vacuum insulation
  • MIIR – MiiR is a family-owned company based in Seattle, Washington, and their products are insulated and leak-proof
  • Thermos – if your kids have sensitivities and prefer a softer straw, these are great, and of course they come in fun designs

Liquid IV recently came out with kids’ hydration multiplier packs, so Kristy grabbed all of the flavors and will include them in her kids’ lunch routines, putting them in their thermoses because they drink way more water with them!

Frito-Lay has an ultimate snack package which offers 40 assorted varieties of chips, cookies, crackers and more! Perfect for lunches, on-the-go students or teachers – if you’d like to gift a snack!

If your child happens to be in a class with a gluten and/or nut allergy, fortunately Walmart has a great selection for school-friendly snacks!

Grab and go variety snacks from Amazon are perfect not only for lunches, but also for those afterschool activities like softball, CCD, tumbling, soccer, karate, or gymnastics. It’s also a great grab for a teacher/class donation!

There’s nothing like a handwritten note from a loved one, but this year the trend is adorable little note/joke cards to put in their lunch box each day! They have riddles, fun facts, brain teasers and some giggles and laughs! There are also holiday specific ones too!

Time is a thief for real – I can still vividly remember all of the details of the evening that my first daughter was born and now, seven short years later, she has moved into her big-kid room a few weeks shy of entering the second grade! I let her take the creative director roll and she decided the color scheme and theme and it turned out better than I could have imagined….and let’s just say that I wish that I had cool parents like me when I was growing up! See her big kid room redo below!

We have a 4-bedroom home so originally she had her own nursery and toddler room, and when I was expecting my fourth baby, we purchased full-sized bunk beds from Pottery Barn Kids and moved our second daughter in with our oldest. It’s been two years of sharing a room and she’s getting more independent, so I started hinting around the idea of her having her own room again, and she was open to the idea towards the end of the school year. Then she started asking when she could move in, so I decided that my goal would be to have it completed and have her moved in before the new school year started.

I asked her to start thinking about her color scheme and that was easy – teal had become her new favorite color in the past six months replacing the longtime favorite, purple. Next, I had asked her to think about if she wanted a theme, and that was a bit trickier, but it soon came to her once we hit the stores.

First we went to At Home, and there it began! She found the perfect accent pillow to start off with…it was so soft and priced well. Then we grabbed some of the not-so-much-fun things like a mattress protector, pillows, two regular cooling sleeping pillows and two-pack pillows for the decorative sham covers.

Next we looked for bedding. Nothing really stood out until we saw the display and that was it. SOLD! Then we started to check out some of their decor, and then…the theme was born! She found a stuffed pig pillow and instantly it became a teal pig room! At first I was hesitant and couldn’t figure out how I was going to pull this one off – I even tried to talk her out of it, but she insisted, so pig it was. We headed into the wall decor isle and then we found the cutest canvas of a pig with glasses, and then I started to get excited about it all. The teal and pig pink colors could definitely work! We grabbed a couple other items and checked out.

We stopped in at a couple other stores, but didn’t really find what we were looking for. We grabbed some pink Pillowfort Sheets from Target and stopped in a Mattress Warehouse to shop for her new mattress. She got to do their bedMATCH quiz and diagnostic to match her up with the best mattress for her. She loved being able to use their system and picked out a great full-sized mattress that was easy on the pockets too! We ended up with a mattress in a box – the Simmons Blue Dream Memory Foam Mattress. The best part was they had one in stock for us to take home that day and it fit in my “mom van”!

We grabbed smoothies from our favorite smoothie place, Tropical Smoothie Cafe and headed over to Hobby Lobby – jackpot! We found all types of room decor and more, and then we came across the creme-de-la-creme of all pig decor! A huge canvas picture of the cutest pig you ever saw, and I was in love! It ended up being 75% off y’all! It was the easiest purchase of the day! We ended up with a whole cart full of items from HL and finally headed home!

Let’s start with the room re-do. First, I vacuumed and mopped the floors and baseboards and wiped down all of the dressers and windowsills. Since we had always purchased the convertible cribs for 3/4 kids, we transitioned the bed and switched out the decor, made the bed, and started transferring all of the personal items and clothing between the two rooms.

I ended up ordering ombre curtains and an accent rug off of Amazon, and I got the curtain rods from Wal-Mart. I found the vanity/desk off of Facebook Marketplace, brand-new, still in the box! It took a total of four days until we did her room reveal…she LOVED the end result. It was all smiles and she even gave it two thumbs up! If you’d like to see more of this room transformation, be sure to check out the video on Tik-Tok here!

These bed pillows are so cozy! Add a touch of comfort to any bed with a big furry throw pillow or a lounger pillow…instant luxury.

Towels are a must! Grab a set with bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths so you have the basics. Then add a few more bath towels so you’re all stocked up! We all know laundry isn’t exactly top priority during those college years.

And since most dorm bathrooms are shared, a bath caddy, towel wrap, shower cap, and towel twisters can definitely come in handy!!

Storage & Organization

Storage and organization is extremely important, especially in small spaces. These wire and woven storage baskets are stylish AND functional!

These plastic bins are more user-friendly, but still look great in any bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, or living area! They vary in size so you can use them for just about anything!

Fabric bins are also a great option, especially if you don’t have a lot of room when packing. Fold these babies up during transport then pop them open and stuff them full once you’re moved in! Cube organizers are a great place to keep your fabric bins, and they can serve as pseudo dressers or even be used for kitchen storage.

And if your small space has enough room, this bookshelf is a great way to make your place feel home-y! Fill it with books, plants, photos…whatever your heart desires!

Decor

There’s nothing quite like cuddling up under a snuggly blanket to make everything feel okay! Whether you’re watching movies and relaxing on a lazy Sunday or posted up in bed hitting the books, a warm, plush throw blanket is a must.

And to accompany your comfy blanket, an equally comfy throw pillow to lounge on. These large pillows are simple, but an instant favorite!

Add a little life to your space with these artificial plants. They bring brightness and personality to a home without the stress of needing a green thumb!

These letter boards are so fun! Use them to sprinkle inspiration around your space, give yourself important reminders, or leave silly messages for your roomies!

Kitchen

Forget the fine china – save that for holidays at home. These plastic plates, cups, and bowls are easy breezy beautiful! Pick your favorite color – or mix and match – and stock up on your dishware!

Now we’re getting fancy! Breakfast sandwich and a fresh coffee, anyone? How about some waffles? If you’ve got the room, this sandwich maker, waffle maker, and mini Keurig will save a lot of time and money!

Cleaning

Cleaning may not be on the list of favorite pastimes, but it’s a necessity! Grab a mop and broom and keep it simple. A good sweep followed by a quick floor cleanse with hot water and soap goes a long way! If you’re really feeling crazy, grab a duster too and give those cobwebs a regular cleanout.

bedroom chair contemporary furniture

Whether it’s your first time sending a child (more like full-grown adult, right??) off to college or you’re a seasoned pro, those few weeks before the final farewells of summer can be overwhelming with all of the packing and planning! College housing options can vary greatly, from an on-campus dorm room to an off-campus apartment, but the living essentials remain the same! Get your kiddo ready for collegiate life and the exciting year ahead with these college essentials from Target.

Bed & Bath

Every bed needs a soft set of sheets to make it nice and comfy! These sheet sets range from plain to patterned so you can easily show off your personal style – how funny are the banana sheets?!

There’s a few more weeks of summer here and then it’s back to school, and that means shopping for new school supplies, clothes and shoes! Target has a great selection of trendy styles for the kids to choose from this year and a lot of great clothing deals going on too for end of summer! See kids’ styles from Target below.

Frugal and Thriving may earn a small commission from affiliate links in this post, see full disclosure here.

I love the Cat & Jack brand and luckily my kids haven’t complained at all either, so that’s a win-win for me! There is always a great selection to choose from whether it’s their clothing or footwear! Even though we’re shopping for school, they still have great deals on summer sandals and slip-ons. My girls especially will try to wear their sandals and open-toed footwear as long as possible…like, until it snows!

This toddler boys end-of-summer gear is so cute! I prefer simplicity over graphics and patterns, so the henley t-shirt and pull-on shorts for my son are right up my alley, and those shoes are so stinking cute! They are good for play and all things toddler.

For the older boys, there is a new selection of styles to choose from. If you haven’t seen the quick dry cargo shorts, they have a flexible drawstring and are lightweight and soft. All in Motion has a great selection including graphic tees, athletic wear and jackets. The new woven shirts give me island vibes and now I have Kokomo on the brain!

The nice thing about these shirts is that they transition from summer to fall nicely, as September is still mostly warm here, so the short-sleeved styles work with almost all types of bottoms. The longer sleeved shirts are still light enough and work well with a nice pair of jeans, jeggings, or leggings.

Cat & Jack leggings are the best! They have the best prints and I particularly love the durable knee. The leggings hold up so well that I personally am able to recycle them through all three of my daughters! I usually always have to remind my husband when back-to-school shopping that we are getting good bang for our buck since they get triple the wear!

My girls are definitely girly girls and if they could wear dresses or skirts every day, they most definitely would. I love the style of dresses and skirts at Target – they are so trendy and often give the opportunity to layer and accessorize depending on the season. The perfect first-day-of-school outfit or opportunity for a sharp fall picture day look!

Sequins! My middle daughter has a couple of the sequin tees and she really enjoys wearing and showing them off. There are the sequin flip tees for back to school, and the flip tank tops to finish out the summer in. Either way they are a win-win with all of the patterns and colors. TBH they actually hold up better than I originally thought they would, as the quality is durable going through wear and tear and the washer.

Let us know in the comments if you’re still shopping summer or back-to-school styles!

It is seriously summertime with this heatwave and we’re over here dreaming of the pool, the beach, the lake…any body of water that will cool us down, really. And everyone knows a day of swimming and sunning calls for a cute swimsuit! Target has tons of adorable and affordable bathing suits in lots of different styles! Faith hit the store to try on a few…all pieces are true to size – she’s wearing a small! See her Target swimwear roundup below.

This was my absolute favorite bathing suit! I’ve never really been a fan of one-pieces but this one is just darling! The fit is flattering for all body types and the side cutout with the ribbon on the shoulder gives this such a flirty vibe. Definitely a winner in my book!

I loved this bikini top – the keyhole cutout gives it a little extra flair and the back has a crisscross tie that makes it easy to tighten and adjust! I like the look of this ruffled bottom but it is definitely teeeeeny…I think it’s better for style than function. I’d be afraid of giving everyone a show if I was swimming in it.

This leopard-print bikini gives a more full-coverage look. The top is “sports bra” style and has a built-in shelf bra so everything feels really supported and secure. The high-waisted bottom also tucks away the tummy! And who doesn’t love a good animal print?!

When I tried this suit on I didn’t necessarily love it – I’m not sure why – but looking back, I actually like it more than I thought! The skirt part on the bottom has an adjustable tie so it can sit higher up on your tummy or lower around your waist, and the intricate details on the top bring some style to an otherwise basic piece. This look is perfect for a bride-to-be during her bachelorette party or even on a beach honeymoon!

Another one-piece that I really loved! The plunge v-neck and low back make this style sexier, but otherwise it’s a pretty full-coverage suit! The top part does feel a little small, so if you have a larger chest it might be a struggle to keep the girls locked and loaded.

I really loved this dark green bikini. The color and fit both made me feel like I could rock this anywhere and feel great!! The crisscross banded top and side ties on the bottom add a touch of chic to a classic style.

This light green bikini gives me retro vibes with the ruffled bralette top and the high-waisted bottoms! I love the lace-up details on the bottom. The top was a bit big on me, but this is definitely a great suit for someone who is larger on top!

Okay – this nude bikini gives me mixed feelings. I want to like the style of the top but it kind of squished everything down and took away some of my (very small) curves. I do really like the ruching detail, and you can’t see it in the photo but the straps tie at the shoulder to give pretty bows! The bottom is a classic tie bottom which is always a solid choice. Overall, I think the color washes me out (time to grab some self-tanner) but I think this could look really cute on someone with a nice summer tan.

Out of all the bathing suits I tried on, this one-piece was my least favorite. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it, it’s just a lot of pattern for me, and after finding the suit online, I realized I tied the top incorrectly…whoops. It could technically be worn either way but the way I’m wearing it, it felt too small towards the middle of my chest but left gaps in the fabric closer to my underarms. I do think it’s a unique silhouette though, and if you love all things floral you’d probably like this!

And another one that took me out of my comfort zone! I actually don’t hate the look of this one, however the top was just a tad large. I really like the underwire with the keyhole cutout though, and even though the bottom is low-rise, it felt very comfortable on. I think this one is a fun look for a tropical vacation!

A mantle is usually the focal point of the room, so make the most of it by decorating it with careful thought and precision. Balance different elements like neutrals with pops of color, mix and match shapes and sizes, and add a few unique pieces, like these woven carrots and jumping bunnies from Decocrated, to draw attention!

Bunnies & birds (both from Decocrated) and a beautiful reminder to “live simply” make for clean, classic decor on your shelves. Natural elements like faux greenery and woodsy-looking filler in a glass bowl tie everything together and help bring the outdoors inside.

Hoppy spring! This sweet sign and bowl full of carrots from Decocrated are the perfect pieces to get you in the mood for Easter!

This gorgeous metal and wood tray is a stylish centerpiece for your kitchen counter or coffee table. Top with cute Easter decor, like this bunny statue, and a fake plant or candy bowl to complete the look.

We all know the kitchen is the heart of the home – it’s where all the good things happen! Cooking, eating, gathering with friends and family…this engraved cutting board in this wooden recipe book holder from Decocrated serves as an eye-catching decor piece for all of your kitchen endeavors.

Such adorable additions to the kitchen! This “hello spring” dish towel from Decocrated and this woven basket filled with pretty faux flowers adds a pop of fun femininity to your cooking space.

This tiered basket from Decocrated is perfect for the bathroom! It looks great on the countertop or on shelf, and you can stock it full of towels, beauty product jars and soap dispensers, and accents like a candle or faux plant to make your bathroom feel like a luxurious spa!
