Christmas trees may just be the most versatile holiday decorations out there. With so many types of trees to choose from, real or artificial, and an endless amount of ornaments and decorations to adorn it, you can really tailor your tree to showcase your individual style and personality. Whether you like classic, cutesy, or chic, making your Christmas tree your own is one of the best parts of prepping for the holidays. See our trees, and how we like to decorate them, below.

The Family Tree

This is Kristy’s family tree, and it’s her pride and joy! As a collector of Christmas ornaments, she has curated a gorgeous collection over the years and the resulting tree is a sentimental statement piece. Filled with unique ornaments that mark special moments and occasions in her and her family’s lives, her favorite thing to do is curl up with a cup of coffee and reminisce in the glow of the Christmas lights. Also, this 7.5ft tree happened to be left behind, brand new and never used, by the old owners of her house and was found one day tucked away in the back of the attic…what a lucky find!

This ornament is from Kristy’s family’s first trip to Disney this year. A replica of Cinderella’s castle and other Disney landmarks sit encased inside an iridescent glass Mickey Mouse head. This is Kristy’s favorite ornament!

This little chocolate bar is straight from Hershey Park, where Kristy’s now-husband proposed to her on the weekend of her 30th birthday. How sweet!!

As a business owner, Kristy spends a lot of her time getting work done, and her husband likes to tease her about how hard she works! This grumpy elf sings a little jingle about “taking care of business.” Very fitting.

The Kids’ Tree

Tree | Tree Collar | Bow Tree Topper

Because her family tree is carefully coordinated and decorated, Kristy also puts up a tree (this is a 6.5ft pencil tree) just for the kids so they can join in on the decorating fun! Every year, Elf on the Shelf brings her kids a box of themed goodies filled with items from their favorite characters of the moment, which includes a Christmas ornament. Spiderman, Lion King, Minnie Mouse, and Frozen have been just a few!!

This Disney castle ornament from Lenox is silver-plated, topped with 24k gold accents, and makes a beautiful addition to any tree. Embossed with the year 2021, it’s a commemoration of Kristy’s family trip to Disney this past fall.

If you’re familiar with the story of “The Polar Express,” then you know the meaning behind this bell from Santa’s sleigh! It represents the magic of Christmas and serves as a reminder to believe.

The Grinch is a holiday classic, and this ornament depicts the story of how this mischievous, misunderstood outcast from Whoville tries to steal Christmas.

This Tangled Rapunzel stained-glass ornament and this Frozen Elsa ornament (she sings!!) are both favorites of Kristy’s daughter and add fun princess magic to the kids’ tree.

The Mini Tree

Your tree doesn’t have to be big to be beautiful! I love having and decorating my own tree, but my apartment isn’t very large and I don’t have the room for a full-sized tree. I grabbed this 4.5ft pre-lit tree and I love it! I really made it my own by decking it out in black and gold (my favorite colors) and it fits perfectly in my small space without being overwhelming.

I kept the decorations simple with with these black and gray ball ornaments and gold glitter poinsetta flowers. The animal-print Mickey Mouse heads were a gift from my sister when she went to Disney years ago, but they really complement my black and gold theme, and I love the personal element they add to the tree.

All that glitters IS gold if this tree skirt is any indication! I wasn’t sure if the sequins would be too much in a small space, but I got a smaller skirt (36″) and I am obsessed with it. The sequins add some fun sparkle, and it looks gorgeous glittering under the lights of the tree at night.

The holidays are meant for spending time with your loved ones and making memories together, and when the whole family gathers, it’s sure to make for some good stories. Coordinating pajama sets are a great way to bring a little laughter (and a whole lot of cozy) to your annual family get-together and will look adorable in photos, staged or candid. These comfy PJs from Zulily will certainly add a touch of humor to your holidays and get the whole family in on the fun. See some of the styles we picked out below.

For the whiskey-loving traditionalist in the family, this pajama set will speak to their soul. Let them hang out in their PJ’s, sip on a glass of something strong, and watch the magic (and mania) of Christmas unfold.

What would the holiday season be without at least one mental breakdown?? For the family member who is sure to have the inevitable meltdown, this pajama set is a good way to lighten the mood and hopefully help them cope….a soft pair of PJs usually does the trick (and maybe one of those whiskeys).

You know this family member. They seem to be surrounded by chaos but somehow manage to handle it with ease and make hosting the holiday look effortless. The pie may be burning in the oven, and the cat may have knocked down the tree, and there’s definitely not enough liquor, but your Christmas chaos coordinator has got it covered. Trust them.

This pajama set serves a double purpose – it’s perfect for the fan of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” but it’s also fitting for the family member who just really doesn’t seem to have a clue what’s going on…ever. We’ll let it slide for now and embrace their endearing ignorance. It is the holidays, after all.

And sometimes your holiday gathering just calls for a simple “well, sh*t,” to really sum it up. Because as we know, even though it may get hectic, and we swear to do it all differently next year, somehow we’ll make it through and look back on these times with fondness and love. That’s the true spirit of Christmas.

Don’t think we forgot about the kiddos! If you’ve got a couple of little troublemakers on your hands, these pajama sets are exactly what they need. And don’t let the sweet faces of brother and sister fool you…usually the one claiming “I didn’t do it!!” is most certainly the one who did it, but we love them all the same.

These are just a handful of the many pajama sets available from Zulily. Shop all adult PJs here and all PJs for kids here!

Ladies and gentlemen, today is a very, very special day. It is our queen Kristy’s birthday, and we are wishing her the happiest of days and lots of love, success, and wishes granted in the year to come. I am beyond thankful to know and love this amazing mom, devoted wife, loyal friend, badass businesswoman, and all-around awesome lady and to be able to call her my mentor, boss, AND best friend. How did I get so lucky?! She’s turning 36 this year and we’re getting a glimpse of how she is spending her special day. Read on for her birthday wishlist, her favorite ways to celebrate, and what is yet to come. Happy Birthday, Kristy xoxo.

MoroccanOil Dry Texture Spray | Kate Spade Stud Earrings | Taco vs Burrito Card Game | Large Tumbler Candle | “Firefly Lane” Book | Michael Kors Crossbody Bag | Dish Towel Set | Olive Leaf Plant | Wood and Cork Coasters | Picnic Gift Basket

This year my birthday wishlist has lots of items for the home, plus some fashion and beauty products I’ve had my eye on for a while! What’s at the top of my wishlist? This picnic basket from Harry & David (look at all those delicious snacks!!), this Michael Kors crossbody bag (cute + convenient is my favorite fashion category), and this texture spray by MoroccanOil (it gives my hair SO much volume!). I always like to put together a list of suggestions so my family and friends don’t stress over gifts, but I love surprises, too. And my favorite birthday gift is getting to spend quality time with the people I love!! See how I like to celebrate my special day below.

The Celebration

The best way to start your birthday? With a glass of chilled bubbly, of course! Moët & Chandon is one of my favorite champagnes and definitely holds a special place in my heart. Fun fact: I adopted my first dog eight years ago after enjoying a bottle of Moët, and he is aptly named after it…he’s my little angel! These days, I like to reminisce and celebrate another year of life by enjoying a nice cold flute of this champagne.

Another celebration favorite: a meat and cheese spread!! My daughter and I love to create and share these together. A few different Italian meats, a couple of gourmet cheeses, some olives, and a little crostini and you’ve got your very own restaurant-quality charcuterie! My sister gifted me this gorgeous marble and brass cheeseboard this year, and of course I couldn’t wait to use it.

Who doesn’t love a spa day?! My husband surprised me with a couple’s massage this year and let me tell you, this spa was absolutely amazing! I felt like a new woman after my massage…relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready for a delicious dinner.

This coastal chic winery is such a hidden little gem and has quickly become one of my favorite places to go for dinner and drinks. They have the best food, the finest wines, and the most beautiful vineyard and gardens. Being able to enjoy a romantic evening here with my husband was definitely a great way to celebrate!

If you know me at all then you know I LOVE a sweet treat! These caramel apples from Mrs. Prindable’s are crisp and crunchy, yet creamy and decadent, and seriously scrumptious. Between my kids, my husband, and me, these apples did NOT last long.

And my favorite way to close out the day is snuggled up on the couch with the kiddos, the pups, the hubby, and lots of blankets, obviously. We love to make popcorn, put on a holiday movie, and enjoy the fire…this living room renovation was completed recently and we can’t get enough of hanging out in here!!

The New Additon

This year was certainly a special one as we added a new member to the family!! Meet Cody – our adorable husky pup. He loves to run around in the yard, play with his doggie brother Moët, and give lots of cuddles to the kids!! This little fluff ball has brought so much joy to our family and we are so blessed to have him!

And there you have it! A little peek into how I like to celebrate my special day. I’m so grateful for everything the last year has brought me, and I’m looking forward to what 36 has in store!! I’ll also be taking a trip with my girlfriends this weekend to a resort in the Poconos for some much-needed quality time with the ladies. Stay tuned for our post on our girls’ weekend…it’s going to be a good one! – xo, Kristy

Get ready to deck out your home with all things spooky this Halloween season…without spending a lot of money! DIY Halloween decorations are easy to make and super inexpensive. Dollar Tree has SO many great decor ideas and the supplies you need to make them!! See some of our favorite projects below along with step-by-step instructions.

Halloween Mantel

Frugal and Thriving may earn a small commission via affiliate links in this post. See full disclosure here.

Transform your fireplace for Halloween by dressing up your mantel! Use a spooktacular variety of Halloween decorations, garlands, candles, and figurines to really make it your own. Keep it clean and modern with neutral pumpkins and candles, or get seriously spooky with skeletons, spiders, and spider webs. If you like more of a haunted feel, use potion bottles, tombstones, and flickering fairy lights.

What You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Directions:

  • Have fun with this creation! Layer a variety of spooky elements together to create the ultimate display. Use candles, figurines, garlands, banners, spiders web, and more to make your own look
  • Enjoy the Halloween ambiance at the centerpiece of your mantel all month long!

Studded & Glittered Pumpkins

Make your own sophisticated and expensive-looking decorations for just a couple of dollars! Paint a pumpkin (real or foam) black, white, or a metallic color and use a little glue, glitter, and imagination to give them a chic and edgy look.

What You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Directions:

  • Draw swirling designs or trace the natural indentations on your pumpkin with craft glue and sprinkle on glitter. When dry, brush off the loose glitter.
  • Dip thumbtacks in glue, then in the color glitter of your choice (or, if you prefer, leave the tacks their original color). Let them dry, then push into foam or real pumpkins for a studded look.
  • Spread glue on the entire pumpkin and glitz it out with glitter for a super-glam look.

Spooky Crystal Ball Candlesticks

Create your own creepy crystal ball candlesticks in just a few simple steps. Choose some spooky photos to put inside your “crystal balls” and use these candlesticks as a table centerpiece or mantel accents.

What You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Directions:

  • Gather your supplies.
  • Use scissors to cut the black and white photographs in a circle shape and size to fit the ornaments.
  • Open the ornament, splitting in half. Insert the photograph into the ornament and close.
  • Apply glue at the top of the candleholder and press the ornament into the glue.
  • Place your crystal ball at the center of a party table or casually on a side table for a creepy effect!

Creepy Candles

These creepy candles on a silver platter are the perfect place for displaying Halloween cards or storing candy. Add scary figurines to make these candles frighteningly fun or a Halloween greeting sign to complete the look.

What You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Directions:

  • Carefully cut black and orange pool noodles into various lengths between 4″ and 10″.
  • Using the knife, hollow out about an inch of the middle of each length of noodle so that the LED tealight will fit securely inside. Don’t glue the candles into the pool noodles – you’ll want to be able to switch them on and off.
  • Glue the bottom of each pool noodle to the tray in the arrangement you desire, then turn on the candles. Finally, drape the creepy cloth over the candles, cutting into a smaller size if needed.

Giant Lollipops

These giant lollipops are a sweet addition to your Halloween decor! Great for the garden or trunk-or-treat decorations, these are easy to make and fun to display.

What You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Directions:

  • Carefully cut all pool noodles in half lengthwise.
  • Match different colors of half-noodles together (i.e., pink and purple, orange and purple). Use different lengths to create different sized lollipops.
  • Gently roll the pieces up together and, for best results, leave curled up overnight before gluing to help keep their shape! A good trick is to wedge the coil between a table and a heavy chair to “set” overnight.
  • In the morning, use hot glue to attach the halves together, then glue them back into a roll.
  • Poke a wood dowel or skewer into the middle of each coil to secure, and wedge them again to let the glue dry for at least 15 minutes.
  • Cover the “lollipops” in clear basket bags and secure the ends of the bags with the twist ties provided.
  • Add a bow or ribbon to the base of each lollipop.

A coffee cup warmer is an essential you didn’t know you needed until you have it, but then you won’t be able to live without. Never drink room temperature coffee again with this sleek warmer that has three temperature settings so you can keep your coffee as warm as you like it.

This funny coffee mug will let your family or coworkers know when it’s finally safe to approach you and start a conversation if you’re one of those “don’t talk to me until I’ve had a cup of coffee” people (again, guilty).

Coffee weather is the best weather! Snuggle up in this cozy sweatshirt and pour yourself a hot cup of coffee…then sit back, relax, and enjoy.

If you love knowledge as much as you love coffee, then this is the book for you. Filled with fun facts, a little bit of history, and general coffee knowledge, this book has everything you need to know about coffee.
