There are many benefits to filling your home with live plants. They help boost your mood, they purify the air, and they can also reduce stress. Taking care of plants can be a full-time job though, and it may be intimidating if you’ve never had a plant baby before. If you start with an easy-to-care-for indoor plant, you’ll soon see how wonderful it can be to have your home filled with lively greenery! See our list of the best indoor plants below…even if you don’t have a “green thumb,” these plants can thrive under your care with just a little love and attention.

Snake Plant

Frugal and Thriving may earn a small commission via affiliate links in this post. See full disclosure here.

Snake plants are among the easiest plants to care for, and they’re great for propagation! They don’t need a lot of water and they do well in most lighting situations, but preferably steady, indirect light. Water your snake plant when you feel the top 1-2 inches of soil getting dry. A little bit goes a long way, and it’s always easier to add more water than it is to drain the soil.

Pothos Plant

Another plant that’s super easy to take care of and to propagate is the pothos plant. These guys like bright, indirect light and can thrive in a wide range of soil conditions, but prefer the soil to completely dry out between waterings (making it great for those that find a watering schedule tough to stick to).

Monstera Plant

Monstera plants are just slightly more tricky than say, a snake plant or a pothos plant, but once you figure out your monstera plant, the work will be worth it! These gorgeous tropical-looking plants make beautiful additions to the home and are great for photo ops. Keep them in bright, indirect sunlight and keep the soil damp but not overly soaked. When you feel the top couple of inches of soil getting dry, give your monstera a little watering and let it absorb completely.

Majesty Palm Plant

Majesty palm plants are a larger houseplant (more like a tree) and can get up to 10 feet tall (!!) but grow slowly indoors so you don’t have to worry about your palm plant taking over your living room. Keep your majesty palm in a bright corner and give it lots of water. The soil should remain moist but not soaked.

Aloe Plant

Aloe plants are pretty low maintenance…keep them in a bright, sunny spot and water them deeply but sparingly. They don’t require much water and you should wait for the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Bonus – you can use the gel inside of a mature leaf to heal cuts and burns (just don’t ingest it!!).

Succulent

Succulents are plants that thrive in warm, dry climates and they love lots of sunshine! Put them in an area with direct sunlight and seldom water them. Succulents can go weeks without being watered!! An ideal watering scheduling for a succulent is about once every two weeks.

Cactus

A cactus is another type of desert plant that is very low maintenance. Just like succulents, they do extremely well in direct sunlight and with little water. Give your cactus a little water every couple of weeks, waiting until the soil has completely dried out.

As you get to know your houseplants, the main principle is to keep an eye on the soil. In general, you want it to be slightly damp and not overly dry. I usually give my plants a smaller amount of water twice a week rather than a lot of water once a week (with the exception of the succulents). I find they do better with this schedule but again, you have to find what works best for you! Also, leaves will typically turn yellow and droop when they are over-watered and turn brown and crispy if they need more water. Finding a good balance of lighting and a normal watering schedule may take a little trial and error, but you’ll have the best shot at success with these houseplants! Let us know which ones you’ll be bringing into your home…thanks for reading xo.

If you need a little sprucing up in your living room, updating your coffee table is an easy and inexpensive way to change up your style. Maybe you’re feeling sleek and modern, or perhaps you’d prefer a neutral boho look. Your ideal style might also be rustic farmhouse, or clean and classy…whatever vibe you dig, dressing up your coffee table is a lot of fun and can really give your living room a whole new feel. See some style inspiration below.

Modern

Frugal and Thriving may earn a small commission via affiliate links in this post. See full disclosure here.

Coffee Table | Area Rug | Vases | Tray | Candle Holder | Aloe Plant | Coasters | Votive Candles | Style Book

If you want to go modern, black and gold are great colors to use. Keep the lines clean and simple and use accent pieces that look rich and luxurious. Adding a small, simple plant like aloe keeps the look from feeling clinical, and a soft, textured rug ties the whole area together.

Bohemian

Coffee Table | Area Rug | Reed Diffuser | Geometric Candle Holder | Vases | Pampas Stems | Doily | Coasters | Beaded Garland

For a bohemian vibe, think lots of neutral colors and natural-looking materials. Woven, soft textures and warm woods keep the space looking bright and clean. Add some dimension with geometric and lace accents. The opposing looks give your coffee table character, and a woven tassel rug is playful yet practical.

Farmhouse

Coffee Table | Area Rug | Decorative Vases | Lanterns | Metal Tray | Mason Jars | Decorative Books | Coasters | Beaded Garland | Candle

If you want to turn your living room into a rustic farmhouse, distressed, vintage-looking pieces are key. Mix wood with metal and use lots of bright colors like white and light blue. This will make your space feel open and airy yet quaint and cozy.

Classic

Coffee Table | Area Rug | Candle Sticks | Taper Candles | Flower Arrangement | Apothecary Jar | Tealights | Vase Filler | Coasters

For a classic look, glass and mirrors mixed with silver pieces and a feminine accent color like light pink looks glamorous and classy. Pillar candles and an apothecary jar filled with pink pearls and a tea light will soften the space, and an artificial floral centerpiece will make a gorgeous focal point all year long.

The holiday season is officially over and it’s finally time to put away all those Christmas decorations you so carefully hung, displayed, and coordinated. When you put your seasonal decor away, your home can be left feeling empty and cold without all of the rich colors, soft twinkling lights, and faux greenery. Give your home a winter refresh and put a new spin on the winter blues…these ones will have you feeling comfy, cozy, and ready to snuggle up on snow days. See how you can bring a little post-holiday rejuvenation to your home with these decor items from Target.

Bold blues, soft creams and whites, and cool grays with touches of striking black make for a color scheme that embodies a frosty winter wonderland. To keep this vibe from feeling cold, play with warm, soft fabrics like velvet and chenille with accents like fringe and tassels. Bold blues, soft creams and whites, and cool grays with touches of striking black make for a color scheme that embodies a frosty winter wonderland. To keep this vibe from feeling cold, play with warm, soft fabrics like velvet and chenille with accents like fringe and tassels. Layer lots of throw pillows and blankets in different patterns and add extra cushiony seating with a pouf ottoman. Wicker baskets in white and black look clean and modern yet rustic and charming. A simple wall mirror will brighten and enlarge your space, and the addition of a few color-coordinated candles in delicious winter scents, plus some artificial eucalyptus stems in a sleek vase, will tie everything together and make your room feel homey and lived-in.

You don’t have to be a professional interior designer to make your home look like it should be in a magazine! A few tricks of the trade, a handful of statement decorations, and a little personality can go a long way. When it comes to decorating shelves for the holidays, you can fully embrace the spirit of the season while still showcasing your unique style…it’s simple! The key to decorating your shelves for the holidays is finding balance. Place smaller items in groups or next to larger pieces, choose one or two items to be standout pieces, keep all of the colors in the same color scheme, and add a little greenery for a touch of liveliness.

This wooden tile ledge set (available in 7 different styles) is a sweet way to dress up your shelves for the holidays! Balance the long, low profile with taller, more compact items like this beautiful Lenox deer figurine and tree silhouette photo frame from Decocrated.

Kristy put together this gorgeous nativity scene herself using a statue set and accent pieces like this miniature pine tree and metal star pedestal to complete the look. She also took this tobacco basket and embellished it with this artificial cedar and pine wreath (attached with these) to create her own decorative piece. The white statues really stand out against the darker background items.

Gnomes are a group favorite and item, and this adorable plush pair found their home next to this color-coordinated wooden sign from Decocrated. Red, gray, and cream are clean, modern colors for the holiday.

This vintage Christmas truck is coming straight from the Christmas tree farm with a couple of lush green trees in tow (bonus: they light up!!). The metal, antique design adds a classic touch to any holiday decor…this is definitely a statement piece!

But wait, there’s more! How inviting does this fireplace look surrounded by holiday decor and the mantle hung with nametag-labeled cable knit stockings (with ones for the pups, too) and adorned with fresh cedar tip boughs?? I know I could spend hours cuddled up here in all the coziness!

Mr. Snowman is a friendly face with a smile that lights up as bright as the lamppost he guards, and with the help of his cardinal friends, safely guides the way back home. This little guy fits right in with the rest of the color scheme and adds a dash of personality.

Looking for a sleigh ride in the snow? Craving a cup of hot cocoa to sip on? Or maybe you just want to snuggle up next to a nice, warm fire at the ski lodge…whatever activity is on your mind, this signpost from Decocrated will point you in the right direction! This is a larger decoration that works great as a standalone piece.

Christmas trees may just be the most versatile holiday decorations out there. With so many types of trees to choose from, real or artificial, and an endless amount of ornaments and decorations to adorn it, you can really tailor your tree to showcase your individual style and personality. Whether you like classic, cutesy, or chic, making your Christmas tree your own is one of the best parts of prepping for the holidays. See our trees, and how we like to decorate them, below.

The Family Tree

This is Kristy’s family tree, and it’s her pride and joy! As a collector of Christmas ornaments, she has curated a gorgeous collection over the years and the resulting tree is a sentimental statement piece. Filled with unique ornaments that mark special moments and occasions in her and her family’s lives, her favorite thing to do is curl up with a cup of coffee and reminisce in the glow of the Christmas lights. Also, this 7.5ft tree happened to be left behind, brand new and never used, by the old owners of her house and was found one day tucked away in the back of the attic…what a lucky find!

This ornament is from Kristy’s family’s first trip to Disney this year. A replica of Cinderella’s castle and other Disney landmarks sit encased inside an iridescent glass Mickey Mouse head. This is Kristy’s favorite ornament!

This little chocolate bar is straight from Hershey Park, where Kristy’s now-husband proposed to her on the weekend of her 30th birthday. How sweet!!

As a business owner, Kristy spends a lot of her time getting work done, and her husband likes to tease her about how hard she works! This grumpy elf sings a little jingle about “taking care of business.” Very fitting.

The Kids’ Tree

Tree | Tree Collar | Bow Tree Topper

Because her family tree is carefully coordinated and decorated, Kristy also puts up a tree (this is a 6.5ft pencil tree) just for the kids so they can join in on the decorating fun! Every year, Elf on the Shelf brings her kids a box of themed goodies filled with items from their favorite characters of the moment, which includes a Christmas ornament. Spiderman, Lion King, Minnie Mouse, and Frozen have been just a few!!

This Disney castle ornament from Lenox is silver-plated, topped with 24k gold accents, and makes a beautiful addition to any tree. Embossed with the year 2021, it’s a commemoration of Kristy’s family trip to Disney this past fall.

If you’re familiar with the story of “The Polar Express,” then you know the meaning behind this bell from Santa’s sleigh! It represents the magic of Christmas and serves as a reminder to believe.

The Grinch is a holiday classic, and this ornament depicts the story of how this mischievous, misunderstood outcast from Whoville tries to steal Christmas.

This Tangled Rapunzel stained-glass ornament and this Frozen Elsa ornament (she sings!!) are both favorites of Kristy’s daughter and add fun princess magic to the kids’ tree.

The Mini Tree

Your tree doesn’t have to be big to be beautiful! I love having and decorating my own tree, but my apartment isn’t very large and I don’t have the room for a full-sized tree. I grabbed this 4.5ft pre-lit tree and I love it! I really made it my own by decking it out in black and gold (my favorite colors) and it fits perfectly in my small space without being overwhelming.

I kept the decorations simple with with these black and gray ball ornaments and gold glitter poinsetta flowers. The animal-print Mickey Mouse heads were a gift from my sister when she went to Disney years ago, but they really complement my black and gold theme, and I love the personal element they add to the tree.

All that glitters IS gold if this tree skirt is any indication! I wasn’t sure if the sequins would be too much in a small space, but I got a smaller skirt (36″) and I am obsessed with it. The sequins add some fun sparkle, and it looks gorgeous glittering under the lights of the tree at night.
